Hello Cherokee Families,

Eighth grade families – it has been an amazing 2 – 3 years. We have enjoyed watching our students grow and mature and look forward to hearing about their accomplishments over the next four years at Kickapoo.

Sixth and seventh grade families – we look forward to 1 – 2 more great years with you all. We also had some exciting news announced at last night’s SPS Board meeting. Cherokee is a Year 1 IGNiTE school. Watch this video to learn more. We will also be sharing more information with you all throughout the 15 – 16 school year as well.

Here are a few updates and reminders for you:

1.     Immunizations – 8^th graders for 15 – 16 are required to have the Tdap prior to 8^th grade. IF YOU HAVE ALREADY taken care of this immunization for your child please bring in the records for our nurse. If you have any questions please contact Nurse VanSomeren.

Please note we will NOT release your students 8^th grade schedule in August to you until we have this shot record in hand. Thank you.

2.     Report Cards – Will be sent in approximately 1 – 2 weeks. If your address has changed please update it with our office as soon as possible. Also, please make sure all fines/fees have been paid.

3.     Also, you can follow us on Twitter by searching for @CherokeeSPS or you can receive text messages via Remind by sending a text to 81010 with the message @principalp

a.     We use our Twitter feed to not only make announcements, but also celebrate and share our story. I encourage you to check it out. 5.     2015 – 2016 School Calendar - The SPS school board approved the 15 - 16 calendar last week and it can be found HERE

Postcards will be sent to families of incoming 7^th graders in late July to notify you of the day/time of your orientation. Please see below for the dates and times as you plan ahead.

Tuesday, Aug. 4: 7th grade Panthers @ 5 - 6 p.m. & 7th grade Ravens 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 5: New to Cherokee 8th graders orientation from 12 – 1.

Current 7^th graders returning as 8th graders may pick up schedules after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5^th. We do NOT have an orientation for 8^th grade.

Hello Cherokee Families,

I hope all our amazing mother’s had a great Mother’s Day yesterday.

Wow, where has the school year gone? Please remember we still have 8 more days for school and we need our students here and engaged every day. Thank you for making Cherokee such a great place. We couldn’t do it without all of our families.

Reminder to please keep an eye on our website and the daily announcements as we are adding information about summer camps, end of year activities, and much more daily.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to an amazing Teacher Appreciation week last week. Our staff really appreciated it.

This may be my last communication for the 14 – 15 school year. If so, THANK YOU to all parents and families. a.     Plenty of seats still available! Registration for ALL ages is currently open. Don't delay because it will be the Best. Summer. Ever. #SummerAtSPS

c.      Transportation is free to Carver for any Cherokee student living more than 1.5 miles from Carver. However, it will be delayed if you registered after April 1. Free breakfast and lunch as well!

5.     Artworks - The Artworks program is so much fun they don’t know they’re learning!

a.     Artworks is designed to foster an appreciation of art for students entering grades 3-8 for the 2015-2016 school year. Artwork introduces students to a variety of materials and artistic concepts to evoke their curiosity and to hone their natural creativity. Students work with professional artists who teach students in a fun, relaxed environment where they can express their creativity and gain self-confidence.

b.     Enroll at the Summer School office located in the Kraft Administrative Center, 1359 E. St. Louis St. beginning at 9 a.m. on March 2.  The $30 supply fee is due at the time of registration.  Students receiving free/reduced lunch during the regular school year can apply for a fee waiver.

c.      There are two Artwork sessions.  The first is June 15-26 and the second is July 6-17.  A morning section, 8:30 – 10 a.m., and an afternoon section, 12:30 – 2 p.m. is offered during each session.  Students may attend both sessions but only one section in each session.  Artwork classes will be held at Bingham Elementary, 2126 E. Cherry St.

6.     Grade level Honor assemblies – May 19^th 6^th grade at 9:45 a.m. & 7^th grade at 11 a.m. 8^th grade on May 20^th at 8:15 a.m. Teachers will contact families of students receiving honors. Please contact the teams or teachers with questions.

7.     Looking for a way to recognize Cherokee staff? We’ve had several parents do this recently. Thanks so much! You have no idea how much this means to our staff.

Clarification to item #2 below:

7^th grade shot clinic – a FREE immunization clinic for any current 7^th grader to receive the Tdap (required), Hep A, HPV, and meningococcal vaccine is being held Wednesday, May 6^th at 1 p.m. Permission forms were sent home last week and must be returned by Tuesday, May 5^th if you want to participate.

The only vaccine required prior to 8^th grade is the Tdap. The others are not.

What a beautiful weekend! I hope you all were able to enjoy time with friends and family while enjoying the sunshine.

4.     PTSA – Cherokee Middle School PTSA is looking for parents who would like to get involved for the 2015-2016 school year. We only a few spots filled, and there are many more to go. PTSA is not just about Fundraising...we do Dances, Spirit Wear, Reflections, Community Awareness, Teacher Appreciation...and so much more!
