Feb. 29, 2016 Announcements

Hello Cherokee Families,

The 3rd quarter has flown by and here we are in the final five days before Spring Break. Please continue to encourage and support our students to finish strong. Need help or guidance? Don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teachers or counselor at any time. We are here to help.

Spring Break is from Saturday, March 5 through Monday, March 14. We will return to school on Tuesday, March 15th.

Two resources I have found valuable in educating our children and parenting a middle schooler are All-Pro Dad and Common Sense Media.

The Smart Talk - The Smart Talk gets parents and kids together to have a clear conversation about all the devices you use and how to be responsible.

Here are a few updates and reminders for you:
1. Daily Announcement and website – Remember you can stay closely connected with these listed events and even more each day by visiting our website HERE. Our Daily Announcements are updated Monday – Friday.
2. 2015 - 2016 Yearbook orders - DEADLINE is TODAY. Cost is $18 and you can order HERE
3. Our 7th Annual Blood Drive - TODAY - Monday, Feb. 29th from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. in the Cherokee cafeteria. Hosted by Cherokee National Junior Honor Society in conjunction with Community Blood Center of the Ozarks. One hour of your day could save up to 3 lives. Please return the form your student brought home or email Mr. Petree at cpetree@spsmail.org if you plan to donate. Thank you. Read here to learn WHY we started the drive.
4. Access for All - Does your student need WiFi access at home to complete assignments? We have a solution! Read HERE for more information and an application. We have hard copies in the library also.
5. Make your mark at Explore! - Enrollment for students entering 6th - 8th grade in 2016-2017 is open.  Current 8th graders going to 9th grade may register now as well. More info can be found HERE. We currently have 117 students registered. . Are you?
Attend when you can during session 1 or 2. . .full-time attendance not required.
This summer, Explore will offer students eight weeks of exciting opportunities to pursue their unique interests and passions. From May 26 through July 29, each day will be packed with engaging, relevant and personal learning opportunities, enriched by integrated technology, exciting field experiences and hands-on activities.
Through partnerships with Mercy Hospital, Askinosie Chocolate, local conservation agencies and high school drama department's, middle school students may engage in experiences they never imagined possible.
New this year, Artworks will be offered free at two locations. Middle school students who attend Artworks in the morning will have the option of riding a bus to a nearby middle school to take other course offerings in the afternoon.
Middle school students will attend classes Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be no classes May 30, July 1, or July 4. With free transportation for eligible students and breakfast and lunch served at every school, Explore will offer a great experience for everyone.  
6. Pick-A-Project - Be the first to help support our school garden with a Spring face lift? Any amount would be greatly appreciated. http://www.supportsps.org/pick-a-project Thank you.
7. Health Science Academy @ Mercy - This Flyer was sent home a few weeks ago with all current 7th graders. See our announcements for more information. Application deadline is March 4th.
8. Linda Luke Librarian of the year - The Foundation of Springfield Public Schools is now accepting nominations for the 2016 Linda Luke Librarian of the Year until March 16th! If you’d like to nominate Ms. Bueno please complete this FORM and email to me at wtpowers@spsmail.org or  nmurdock@spsmail.org
9. PTSA meeting dates - We would love to have you be a part of our team. You are NOT required to do additional work, but we would love your thoughts, input, feedback as we wrap up the 15-16 year and begin planning for 16-17. Our remaining meeting dates are: March 15th, April 19th, and May 10th. All meetings are at 7:30 a.m. in our library. Can’t attend the meetings, but want to be involved? Just shoot me an email.
10. 8th grade families - It is that time of year when students interested in being part of activities at KHS as 9th graders should keep a close eye out for the announcements. There are a few deadlines and meetings this week. Check our daily announcements for more information.
11. Track - 7th and 8th graders interested in competing in track - practice begins Tuesday, March 15th. You must have all paperwork and a current physical on file. If you have question please contact Coach Ballenger or Coach Ross as soon as possible.
12. We have an amazing team here at Cherokee. Thank you all the families who submitted a recognition this year! You have no idea how much this means to our teachers and staff.

What a beautiful weekend we had. I hope each of you were able to enjoy the sunshine and unseasonably warm weather. It looks like the potential for some winter precip is possible.

Through partnerships with Mercy Hospital, Askinosie Chocolate, local conservation agencies and high school drama department's, middle school students may engage in experiences they never imagined possible.

Please complete this survey - As part of the IGNiTE teaching and learning initiative, Springfield Public Schools partnered with BrightBytes, an educational research and analytics organization that will help us learn more about our schools’ technology use for student learning. Now through Feb. 26th we are asking you to please participate in a 5 minute electronic survey. Here is a link to the parent survey:  https://www.BByt.es/MK3QP

The second progress report (6 weeks) for 3rd quarter was sent home Friday, Feb. 12th.  Please continue to communicate with your student, monitor eSchool, communicate with teachers and keep us in the loop of any concerns you may have. We are here to support you and your student.

10. Student Council service project - Ends Friday, Feb. 19th. Please help as we are collecting various toiletries and basic clothing needs this week as a service project for Robertson Elementary school. Students may bring soap, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, smaller sizes of sweatpants, socks,  and underwear to be collected in their homerooms. Thank you.
