Hello Kickapoo families,

It was another beautiful weekend and we hope you were able to get outdoors and enjoy it with friends and family. As we enter April we are down to our final 7 weeks with seniors and 8 weeks with everyone else. We need everyone to continue to be in school and engage everyday.

* Seniors - Are you interested in being a speaker at graduation? Graduation Speaker packets are available in the Counseling Center. Try outs will be Thursday, April 18th after school in the library classroom. Packets are due to the Counseling Center April 11th.
* SPS Final Exam Exemption Requirements - 

Students are eligible for finals exemption by meeting the following criteria:

• 90% overall attendance (school-sponsored activities do not count as absences) per semester
• Received no ISS or OSS for the semester
• Passing the class with an 80% or greater prior to the final exam
• Exempt students may take the final to improve their grade in a class; in this case, the final grade cannot hurt the student’s overall grade
• Required to attend class during the final exam block and complete optional enrichment tasks provided
• Dual credit, AP, and Launch virtual classes are NOT eligible for final exemptions.

* Student Attendance - Thank you to everyone for being in school everyday. A reminder our goal is for all students to be in attendance 95% or more for the year. Here is where we are by grade level for Week 29 and overall year-to-date as a school. Great job by our seniors leading the way & our freshmen with a 1.18% increase over last week!

* 4th Quarter attendance incentives for students with 100% each week and for the quarter. This is for 4th quarter ONLY so everyone is eligible despite previous attendance percentage for quarters 1 - 3. Strive for 95% or better to finish the year strong!

* Attendance - When should students not attend school? Check out this guidance from our school nurses.

* From the Nurses - Cox Care Mobile will be here on April 10 for immunizations or sports physicals. Please fill out the appropriate consent form found on the Nurse’s page at our website kickapoochiefs.org, turn it into the nurse by Monday, April 8th to secure your appointment. 
* From the Nurses - Attention current Juniors! All incoming seniors must have received one dose of the Meningococcal vaccine after their 16th birthday in order to start school in the Fall of their Senior year. Please bring documentation of your vaccine to the nurses by May 3rd to ensure a smooth start to 2024 - 2025 school year. 

* Solar Eclipse, Monday, April 8th - We DO have solar eclipse glasses for all students and classes will be taking students out to safely observe on Monday, April 8th, weather permitting.

* NO School - Friday, April 26th.

* Last Day of School & Final Exams - Thursday, May 23rd.

* Students earn Credits EVERY 9 weeks. Please make sure you are monitoring grades via eSchool Home Access Center under the Classes Tab, then Classwork tab - login here.

* Progress Report - The first progress report for 4th quarter will be live Friday, April 5th. 

* Grades in Canvas are NOT the official grades for students. Teachers do grade items in Canvas. However, all grades are transferred to eSchool and these are the official grades.

* FREE Tutoring for all Kickapoo students, seated or online, is available in our library from 3:25 - 4:25 any day we are in session.

* Junior ACT, Tuesday. April 9th - All juniors will be taking the ACT or ACT Work Keys exam on Tuesday, April 9th. Students MUST have an ID (school ID or Drivers License) AND charged Chromebook (school issued). Arrive to school by 8 a.m. to get checked in for testing.

* End of Course (EOC) Exams - Students in Algebra I/IB, Biology, English II, or American Government will be taking their EOC exams during class time on the following dates:

Algebra I/IB - Monday, May 13 & Tuesday, May 14.

English II - Monday, May 13 & Tuesday, May 14.

Biology - Thursday, May 16.

American Government - Thursday, May 16.

* Explore (Summer School) - High School classes are online only and will be held June 3 - 28 and July 8 - Aug. 2. Students can sign up for one or both sessions.

Enrollment is now open. Determine the appropriate date to enroll based on the grade level your child will enter in August 2024. 

When it's time to register, visit sps.org/explore to complete the enrollment process. Use your SPS student ID number and birth date or Home Access Center username and password to log in.

* Financial Information: You may pay fines and fees at the financial office with Mrs. Liston. You may also view financial information and make payments online at https://www.sps.org/spsmyschoolbucks. Fines & fees shown in eSchool are not correct. You MUST go to My School Bucks.

* Chromebook repair process - We have created a form for students to request a Chromebook so they can get theirs repaired. It is located in the Tribe Talk course in Canvas.
Please direct students to the link and have them complete the form. We will contact the students to come to the library to pick up or exchange their Chromebook. If they are unable to complete the form, please have a classmate or teacher complete the form for the student.
Let us know if you have any questions.
* Chromebooks - Students should bring a charged Chromebook to school each day. We are limited on the number of loaners we have and first priority goes to students needing repairs. Thank you.
* CANVAS HELP - Need help accessing and checking online learning with your student? Click here for a list of resources from SPS. You can also click here for a guide for “how-to” items for parents. Please be sure to reach out with questions as we navigate online learning.

* Reminders:

• Any students needing WiFi can request a Kajeet hotspot through our library.
• Kickapoo will open our doors at 7:40 a.m. and first block begins at 8:10 a.m. every day Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday.
• Wednesday is late start for students so staff may participate in professional learning. Classes begin at 8:40 a.m. ALL BUSSES WILL RUN AT NORMAL TIMES.
• Classes end at 3:10 p.m. every day.
• All students should leave school/campus by 3:45 p.m. unless directly supervised by a teacher, coach, or sponsor.
• Students should take home Chromebooks every day & Charge them each night.
• Deliveries to school - Parents/guardians may deliver items to school for your student. We ask that you label and leave them on the table inside the office. Please communicate with your student to let them know items have been dropped off for them as we do not contact them.
• ID badges and dress code - ALL students must have an ID every day. Follow all dress code expectations. Cover ALL B's!
• Need a School ID? Request one from a teacher or go to the ID badge room before school, during lunch, or immediately after school.

* College & Career Ready Update - Hello KHS families from your College and Career Readiness Specialist!
9th grade students in a US History and 10th grade students in World History classes have had the opportunity to explore careers through Naviance (our new College and Career platform), take self-discovery assessments, do basic college searches, and start resumes!
10th grade students have had access to Naviance for the second year and have added even more to their knowledge base this year. We have added to our resumes, and learned about beginning financial responsibility like managing debt and how to pay for college. They have also taken a Personality assessment and a Skills assessment to discuss how those results influence their career choices and work styles.
Naviance also has free ACT Test Prep that students can use to study material, practice test questions, and take full length tests. Juniors took a free Practice Naviance test in the fall and have access to prep for our district-provided Junior ACT on April 9th.

* Student Chromebook Tip - If students indicate eSchool won’t load or printers aren’t showing up etc., the Chromebook might just need a restart to apply an update. It’s easy to check on the toolbar they will have an up arrow inside a circle that asks for a restart when clicked. After a restart if they still have issues then it’s a Chromebook repair using the form located here:  https://forms.gle/sYJ2rzPiX6wnm1P4A

It’s a good practice to have students do a restart once a week at least or encourage them to consider a Friday shut down as they leave for the weekend.

* Graduation Announcements - If you preordered announcements from Jostens they can be picked up in the main office.

* Cap & Gown Orders - If you have already ordered your cap & gown they will be available for pick up during lunches on Thursday, April 18th. IF you have NOT ordered your cap & gown please go to the counseling center to do so ASAP.

* Senior Meeting - Important information for all seniors will be disseminated on Thursday, April 18th at 11 a.m. in the Commons. 

* SPS High School Final Exam Exemption Requirements. Students are eligible for finals exemption by meeting the following criteria:

• 90% overall attendance (school-sponsored activities do not count as absences) per semester
• Received no ISS or OSS for the semester
• Passing the class with an 80% or greater prior to the final exam
• Exempt students may take the final to improve their grade in a class; in this case, the final grade cannot hurt the student’s overall grade
• Required to attend class during the final exam block and complete optional enrichment tasks provided
• Dual credit, AP, and Launch virtual classes are NOT eligible for final exemptions.

* Student Attendance - Thank you to everyone for being in school everyday. A reminder our goal is for all students to be in attendance 95% or more for the year. Here is where we are as a school and by grade level for Week 26 and overall year-to-date as a school. Ninth graders with an increase of 1.71% from last week to lead the way!

* Students earn Credits EVERY 9 weeks. Please make sure you are monitoring grades via eSchool Home Access Center under the Classes Tab, then Classwork tab - login here.

* Grades in Canvas are NOT the official grades for students. Teachers do grade items in Canvas. However, all grades are transferred to eSchool and these are the official grades.

* FREE Tutoring for all Kickapoo students, seated or online, is available in our library from 3:25 - 4:25 any day we are in session.

* Explore (Summer School) - High School classes are online only and will be held June 3 - 28 and July 8 - Aug. 2. Students can sign up for one or both sessions.

Enrollment dates and times are staggered based on students' grade levels. Determine the appropriate date to enroll based on the grade level your child will enter in August 2024.

When it's time to register, visit sps.org/explore to complete the enrollment process. Use your SPS student ID number and birth date or Home Access Center username and password to log in.

* Financial Information: You may pay fines and fees at the financial office with Mrs. Liston. You may also view financial information and make payments online at https://www.sps.org/spsmyschoolbucks. Fines & fees shown in eSchool are not correct. You MUST go to My School Bucks.
* YEARBOOKS are on sale for $55 now through Jostens.com. Sale ends soon and we will not have extras for purchase.

* Jefferson Avenue Street Light project - The underground portion is complete. The poles and lights are scheduled to be installed during Spring Break.

* Student Chromebook Tip - If students are complaining that eSchool won’t load or printers aren’t showing up etc., the Chromebook might just need a restart to apply an update. It’s easy to check on the toolbar they will have an up arrow inside a circle that asks for a restart when clicked. After a restart if they still have issues then it’s a Chromebook repair using the form located here:  https://forms.gle/sYJ2rzPiX6wnm1P4A

It’s a good practice to have students do a restart once a week at least or encourage them to consider a Friday shut down as they leave for the weekend.

* Chromebook repair process - We have created a form for students to request a Chromebook so they can get theirs repaired. It is located in the Tribe Talk course in Canvas.
Please direct students to the link and have them complete the form. We will contact the students to come to the library to pick up or exchange their Chromebook. If they are unable to complete the form, please have a classmate or teacher complete the form for the student.
Let us know if you have any questions.
* Chromebooks - Students should bring a charged Chromebook to school each day. We are limited on the number of loaners we have and first priority goes to students needing repairs. Thank you.
* CANVAS HELP - Need help accessing and checking online learning with your student? Click here for a list of resources from SPS. You can also click here for a guide for “how-to” items for parents. Please be sure to reach out with questions as we navigate online learning.

* Reminders:

• Any students needing WiFi can request a Kajeet hotspot through our library.
• Kickapoo will open our doors at 7:40 a.m. and first block begins at 8:10 a.m. every day Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday.
• Wednesday is late start for students so staff may participate in professional learning. Classes begin at 8:40 a.m. ALL BUSSES WILL RUN AT NORMAL TIMES.
• Classes end at 3:10 p.m. every day.
• All students should leave school/campus by 3:45 p.m. unless directly supervised by a teacher, coach, or sponsor.
• Students should take home Chromebooks every day & Charge them each night.
• Deliveries to school - Parents/guardians may deliver items to school for your student. We ask that you label and leave them on the table inside the office. Please communicate with your student to let them know items have been dropped off for them as we do not contact them.
• ID badges and dress code - ALL students must have an ID every day. Follow all dress code expectations. Cover ALL B's!
• Need a School ID? Request one from a teacher or go to the ID badge room before school, during lunch, or immediately after school.
