March 29, 2016 Announcements

Hello Cherokee Families,

  I apologize for breaking my routine of sending this out to you on Monday’s the last few weeks. It certainly is a busy time of the year here at Cherokee as we wind down one school year and prep for the next one.     
  Can you believe April has arrived! Everything is beginning to bloom and temperatures are beginning to rise. This is a great time of the year.

Two resources I have found valuable in educating our children and parenting a middle schooler are All-Pro Dad and Common Sense Media.

The Smart Talk - The Smart Talk gets parents and kids together to have a clear conversation about all the devices you use and how to be responsible.

Here are a few updates and reminders for you:
1. Daily Announcement and website – Remember you can stay closely connected with these listed events and even more each day by visiting our website HERE. Our Daily Announcements are updated Monday – Friday.

2. Access for All - Does your student need WiFi access at home to complete assignments? We have a solution! Read HERE for more information and an application. We have hard copies in the library also.
3. Make your mark at Explore! - Enrollment for students entering 6th - 8th grade in 2016-2017 is open.  Current 8th graders going to 9th grade may register now as well. More info can be found HERE. We currently have 139 students registered. Are you?
Attend when you can during session 1 or 2. . .full-time attendance not required for students in grades 6-8. Students taking high school courses must meet seat-time requirements to earn credits.
This summer, Explore will offer students eight weeks of exciting opportunities from May 26 through July 29.
New this year, Artworks will be offered free at two locations. Middle school students who attend Artworks in the morning will have the option of riding a bus to a nearby middle school to take other course offerings in the afternoon.
Middle school students will attend classes Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be no classes May 30, July 1, or July 4. With free transportation for eligible students and breakfast and lunch served at every school, Explore will offer a great experience for everyone.  
4. Art Project - Do you have the following items in your garage, basement, or attic? Any old stained glass, colorful dishes, mosaic tiles, or glass gems. Any construction adhesive (Liquid Nails/E6000) that can bind ceramics objects to plastic. Any old tile nippers (these can be returned).
Please send these to Mrs. Sholtis, our art teacher, for an upcoming project to benefit our school. Thank you!
5. Dyslexia information - Decoding Dyslexia MO and Springfield Center for Dyslexia & Learning Invite you to view the movie Journey into Dyslexia on Thursday, April 14th. More info HERE
6. Progress report - The first progress report for 4th quarter will be sent home Friday, April 8th. Remember you can stay up to date on your students grades via eSchool Home Access Center. If you don’t have your student’s password please contact the counselor today!
7. MAP testing - Here is our tentative schedule. If it should change I will let you know. Students perform better in their regular test setting so please be here on time and present each day of testing.  Thank you.
8. PTSA meeting dates - We would love to have you be a part of our team. You are NOT required to do additional work, but we would love your thoughts, input, feedback as we wrap up the 15-16 year and begin planning for 16-17. Our remaining meeting dates are: April 19th and May 10th. All meetings are at 7:30 a.m. in our library. Can’t attend the meetings, but want to be involved? Just shoot me an email.
9. We have an amazing team here at Cherokee. Thank you all the families who submitted a recognition this year! You have no idea how much this means to our teachers and staff.
You can complete an Employee Recognition Form here (the link is functioning again) to show them your appreciation. No recognition is too small. Thank you for taking the time to recognize and celebrate our staff!

March 22, 2016 Announcements

Hello Cherokee Families,


  Please help us keep our students focused through the final 8 weeks of school. As the temperatures begin to rise and the trees and flowers bloom it is sometimes easy for our young people to lose some focus. Being in school every day is the first step to having a strong finish to the school year.

  As I reflect back over the first 3rd quarters of the school year we have so much to celebrate both academically and with our extra-curricular activities. What an amazing school community we have!

From May 26 through July 29, each day will be packed with engaging, relevant and personal learning opportunities, enriched by integrated technology, exciting field experiences and hands-on activities.
Through partnerships with Mercy Hospital, Askinosie Chocolate, local conservation agencies and high school drama department's, middle school students may engage in experiences they never imagined possible.
New this year, Artworks will be offered free at two locations. Middle school students who attend Artworks in the morning will have the option of riding a bus to a nearby middle school to take other course offerings in the afternoon.

9. Linda Luke Librarian of the year - The Foundation of Springfield Public Schools is now accepting nominations for the 2016 Linda Luke Librarian of the Year until Wednesday, March 16th! If you’d like to nominate Ms. Bueno please complete this FORM and email to me at wtpowers@spsmail.org or  nmurdock@spsmail.org

11. 8th grade families - It is that time of year when students interested in being part of activities at KHS as 9th graders should keep a close eye out for the announcements. There are a few deadlines and meetings this week. Check our daily announcements for more information.
12. Track - 7th and 8th graders interested in competing in track - practice begins today Tuesday, March 15th. You must have all paperwork and a current physical on file. If you have question please contact Coach Ballenger or Coach Ross as soon as possible.
