Cherokee Announcements for Nov. 27, 2017

Hello Cherokee families!

We hope each of you had a great Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.

Can you believe December is here this week!? This also means we are nearing the end of second quarter with only 19 school days remaining in this quarter/semester.
Please don’t hesitate to contact teachers at any time with questions.

  1. Carline - IMPORTANT reminders:
  1. Do NOT pick up OR drop off your student on Plainview Avenue. This is very dangerous. If you use a side street please don’t block anyone’s driveway or mailbox.
  2. Remind your student to USE THE CROSSWALK when dropping them off. They should NOT cross Plainview otherwise. The same goes for our parking lot - USE the Crosswalk.
  3. Please pull as far forward as possible before dropping off and picking up students. Carline drop off begins at sign #1. We have two exits to Plainview and both have east and west turns available. Thank you for using both exits.
  4. Please be aware of students walking and riding bikes. Students should use the crosswalk and sidewalk at all times.
  5. Do NOT use the west/athletic parking area for drop off or pick up during school hours as this is where our busses pick up and drop off. Use it for exiting only. Thank you.
  6. IF you need additional time with your student(s) please pull into a parking spot so everyone else can get in and out in a timely fashion.

  1. Bell Schedules for all year - We use a variety of bell schedules throughout the school year to accommodate music and sports assemblies, character ed, Tribe Time, and other occasions. This LINK will take you to a folder with all of the schedules and the dates we will use them. Please pay special attention as class and lunch times vary for each schedule.

  1. Sports Schedules - These are all posted on our website http://cherokee.spsk12.org/pages/Cherokee_Middle_School  

These games begin at 5:30 p.m. All students MUST have a ride to pick them up NO LATER than 15 minutes after the game ends or they will NOT be allowed to attend the next game. Most basketball games and wrestling matches will be over by 7:30 p.m. Mr. Schreiner and Dr. Powers will also inform students attending without a parent if they need rides earlier. Thank you for picking up your children in a timely manner.
IF a student attends games without a parent they must remain in the stands during the game. They may go to the restroom and concession stand between games and during halftime only.

  1. JOIN PTSA - Please consider joining. We have two options - individual/family memberships or Business memberships.  Thank you for your support of our staff and students!

  1. Staff Recognition - We have an amazing team here at Cherokee. Thank you to families who have taken time to recognize our team this year! You have no idea how much this means to our teachers and staff. You can complete an Employee Recognition Form here to show them your appreciation. No recognition is too small. Thank you for taking the time to recognize and celebrate our staff!

11) 2018 - 2019 Transitional Transfers - A transitional transfer request is for students going from fifth-grade to sixth-grade or eighth-grade to ninth-grade who wish to attend a site other than the one in their home residence feeder pattern. This type of transfer is part of an open enrollment process.
Families are responsible for TRANSPORTATION to and from the school if accepted on transfer.
 
Families may request a Transitional transfer from now until Friday, December, 1 at 4:30 p.m.
IF a family applies for and is granted a Transitional Transfer to more than one school the family MUST decide on one school by Monday, Dec. 18th at 4 p.m.
Here is the link for the TRANSITIONAL TRANSFER application.

Also, the Transitional Transfer for incoming students is accepted BEFORE the Immediate Transfer no matter when you filled out the Immediate request. Questions? Call me at 523-7210 any time.

12) Kickapoo U - 8th grade families do you want to learn more about Kickapoo U? What is it? Why should my student(s) be a part of Kickapoo U? All these questions and more will be answered on Wednesday, Nov. 29th at 5 p.m. in the Cherokee cafeteria. Check out the Kickapoo U website for more info in the meantime.

14) Progress Reports - The second 6 week progress report for 2nd quarter will be available Friday, Dec. 1st after school.

A reminder we are in school Monday and Tuesday of this week.
No school Wednesday, Nov. 22 - Friday, Nov. 24. We will see everyone on Monday, Nov. 28th.

Prior to going to KHS for Pride of the Tribe students will learn more about Kickapoo U.

Cherokee Announcements for Nov. 13, 2017

Hello Cherokee families!


Thanks to all of our active and retired Veterans! We hope each of you had a great Veterans Day and if you attended our assembly on Friday we hope you enjoyed our student performances.


Families - We know this time of the year can bring on additional stress for some students and families. The holidays, extra spending, and extra time off from school can take its toll on us. Please let us know if we can support any of you in any way at any time. Thanks!


Lunch reminder - Outside lunch can be brought in for YOUR student ONLY and ONLY by the parent/guardian. NO food for other students and NO food brought in by anyone other than the parent/guardian. Thank you.

11) Flu Shot clinic - All students should have received a form by now.
Cherokee will be providing flu shots/mist on Nov. 15th.
Here is the FORM to complete and return to Nurse VanSomeren by Nov. 13th.

15) Progress Reports - The 1st progress report for 2nd quarter is now available. You can access it via eSchool Home Access, Grades, IPR (Interim Progress Reports).

16) School Pictures - IF purchased were delivered to students Thursday and Friday of last week.
Retakes are this Friday, Nov. 17th at 8 a.m.
IF you want retakes you MUST return the purchased pictures.
Students absent on the original picture day will have their picture taken for the yearbook.

17) School Dance - Our Fall dance is this Friday, Nov. 17th.
Theme is ‘In the Woods.’ Tickets on sale during grade-level lunch periods on Wednesday, Nov. 15, Thursday, Nov. 16, and Friday, Nov. 17th. Tickets cost $5.
BRING YOUR TICKET WITH YOU to the dance.  There will be no tickets sold at the door.
ONLY Cherokee students will be admitted.
Parents must pick up ON TIME (or you will not be able to attend the next dance)!  Drop-Off & Pick-Up will be located at the West Entrance by the gym.
6th & 7th Grade 6:30 – 8:00 pm                 8th Grade 7:00 – 8:30 pm
Proper behavior is expected at the dance.  This includes: proper disposal of trash, no chants, screaming, loud noises or running.  Decorations must be left alone until after the function.
There will be NO RE-ENTRY to the dance.


Students MUST BE IN ATTENDANCE ALL DAY in order to attend the dance.


18) PTSA help with Dance - PTSA is in need of parent volunteers before, during, and after the dance. Please see HERE for details and to sign up. Thanks!


19) Robberson Elementary Supply Drive - Cherokee is partnering again this year with Robberson Elementary school and their Pride Store. Each grade level is collecting specific items this week (Nov. 13 - 17) to supply their store.

20) Food For Fines - Our library is also collecting items this week and students can pay off library fines by donating items for the Robberson Pride Store. See the @CherokeeSPS Instagram post of Ms. Bengsch for more info.
