Cherokee announcements for Jan. 29, 2018

Hello Cherokee families!

We hope you had a great weekend.

  • The 2018 - 2019 SPS school calendar has been approved and can be found HERE.

  • Cherokee 2018 - 2019 Orientation dates & times are:

Monday, Aug. 6th - 6th grade from 4:30 - 6 p.m.

Families of 7th graders - you will receive a postcard notifying you of team placement in late July.
Monday, Aug. 6th - Ravens from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 7th - Endeavor from 5 - 6 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 7th - Panthers from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

(We do NOT have orientation for 8th graders. It is ONLY a schedule pick up).
Wednesday, Aug. 8th - 8th grade schedule pick up from 5 - 6 p.m.

  1. Carline - IMPORTANT reminders:
  1. Do NOT pick up OR drop off your student on Plainview Avenue. This is very dangerous. If you use a side street please don’t block anyone’s driveway or mailbox.
  2. Remind your student to USE THE CROSSWALK when dropping them off. They should NOT cross Plainview otherwise. The same goes for our parking lot - USE the Crosswalk.
  3. Please pull as far forward as possible before dropping off and picking up students. Carline drop off begins at sign #1. We have two exits to Plainview and both have east and west turns available. Thank you for using both exits.
  4. Please be aware of students walking and riding bikes. Students should use the crosswalk and sidewalk at all times.
  5. Do NOT use the west/athletic parking area for drop off or pick up during school hours as this is where our busses pick up and drop off. Use it for exiting only. Thank you.
  6. IF you need additional time with your student(s) please pull into a parking spot so everyone else can get in and out in a timely fashion.

  1. Bell Schedules for all year - We use a variety of bell schedules throughout the school year to accommodate music and sports assemblies, character ed, Tribe Time, and other occasions. This LINK will take you to a folder with all of the schedules and the dates we will use them. Please pay special attention as class and lunch times vary for each schedule.

  1. Sports Schedules - These are all posted on our website http://cherokee.spsk12.org/pages/Cherokee_Middle_School  

These games begin at 5:30 p.m. All students MUST have a ride to pick them up NO LATER than 15 minutes after the game ends or they will NOT be allowed to attend the next game. Most basketball games and wrestling matches will be over by 7:30 p.m. Mr. Schreiner and Dr. Powers will also inform students attending without a parent if they need rides earlier. Thank you for picking up your children in a timely manner.
IF a student attends games without a parent they must remain in the stands during the game. They may go to the restroom and concession stand between games and during halftime only.

  1. JOIN PTSA - Please consider joining. We have two options - individual/family memberships or Business memberships.  Thank you for your support of our staff and students!

  1. PTSA meeting - Our next meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 20th  at 7:30 a.m. in the library. Come join us and learn more about Cherokee and what’s going on with PTSA. ALL families are welcome!
If you want to hear from Dr. Powers and our counselors this is a great opportunity for that 1 on 1 visit.

  1. CHEROKEE HANDBOOK - Just a reminder you can find many answers to questions about Cherokee in our handbook. We give this out every year to families at our orientation. It can also be found on our webpage.


  1. Staff Recognition - We have an amazing team here at Cherokee. Thank you to families who have taken time to recognize our team this year! You have no idea how much this means to our teachers and staff. You can complete an Employee Recognition Form here to show them your appreciation. No recognition is too small. Thank you for taking the time to recognize and celebrate our staff!

  1. Stay updated this winter - Connect with SPS to know when school is canceled and other winter weather tips HERE.

  1. Food Fight 2018 - Extended until Jan. 31st. Cherokee is collecting food and monetary donations for Ozarks Food Harvest. Please make checks payable to Ozarks Food Harvest. See HERE for types of food needed. If you or your business would like to work in conjunction with Cherokee during this timeframe please contact me for details.

  1. Winter Dance - ‘A Night Under the Stars’ will be held Friday, Feb. 16th. Tickets are $5 and on sale during lunch on Feb. 14, 15, & 16.
Cherokee students only.
6th and 7th graders attend from 6:30 - 8 p.m. and 8th graders attend from 7 - 8:30 p.m.
PTSA needs volunteers for the Dance. See more info and sign up to volunteer here.

  1. Nominate a Teacher of the Year - Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year. To nominate a teacher for this honor, simply complete the nomination form. To be eligible, the nominee must have four or more years teaching experience with SPS. Nominations are open until Jan. 30. Learn more.

  1. Yearbook sales - Memories fade, but yearbooks don't. Buy a yearbook to keep those experiences alives.
Cost $18 & are On Sale February 1 - February 26
To Purchase: To use a credit card/debit card or PayPal, go to yearbookforever.com and enter our school name & make sure to select the one in Springfield, MO.

  1. Cheer clinics & tryouts - 6th & 7th graders interested in Cheering for Cherokee during the 18 - 19 school year. Clinics will be March 5th, 6th, & 7th from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. in the small gym.
Tryouts will be held March 8th @ 3:30 p.m. in the small gym.

  1. MAP testing - Cherokee will be MAP testing at the end of April or first of May. As soon as we have the specific dates we will share them with you.

  1. Last day of school - As of now will be Friday, May 18th. This will be finalized once we are out of the winter weather season.

  1. Progress reports - The first progress report for 3rd quarter is now available via Home Access. Questions? Contact teachers for a conference any time.

  1. Explore! 2018 - Explore guides were given to students on Friday. Explore 2018 is designed to provide students exciting opportunities to pursue their unique interests and passions. Each day will be packed with engaging, relevant and personal learning opportunities, enriched by integrated technology, exciting field experiences and hands-on activities, including free Artworks classes.
There will be two sessions of Explore. Session I could start as early as June 4. Session II will be held July 5 - July 31.
Free transportation will be offered for eligible students and free breakfast and lunch will be served daily at every school.
Middle school students will attend Explore classes Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Registration for middle school students begins Feb. 7.
High school students may register for Explore classes beginning Feb. 5.

22) New Clubs - Check the daily announcements on our main webpage. We have two clubs starting! Drama and S.T.E.A.M.’rzz! It isn’t too late to join.

Cherokee announcements for Jan. 22nd, 2018

Hello Cherokee families!


What a week in the Ozarks! Snow, temperatures below zero to start the week and 50s & 60s to end it. The saying is true “If you don’t like the weather just hang around. It will change.”
Even though we only had two days this week it was a great one.
