* Return to Seated Learning Monday, Jan. 31 -

Jan. 28, 2022

SPS Families:

The ongoing surge of the Omicron variant continues to create significant challenges. SPS has documented more than 2,200 cases of COVID-19 among staff and students since returning from Winter Break on Jan. 4 and more than 350 cases this week alone. An improved forecasting of staff absences for next week, however, indicates that the district is able to return to a normal schedule. SPS will resume in-person learning on Monday, Jan. 31.

As staff and students prepare to return to the classroom on Monday, please note the following:

·    Masks are required for all SPS staff and visitors through Feb. 4. Masks are strongly recommended for all students. Please see this guidance regarding appropriate face coverings and how to ensure they are worn properly.

·    Masks must continue to be worn at all times while riding public transportation, including school buses and other district-provided options, due to a federal mandate.

·    Masks are available for staff and students who need them.

·    Every effort will be made to ensure appropriate social distancing within the learning environment, whenever possible.

·    Parents and staff should continue to monitor for symptoms of illness daily.

·    Students exhibiting symptoms of any illness must stay home until symptoms resolve and/or they are cleared by a medical provider to return. For more information on the related policy and procedures, please view the handbook.

·    COVID-positive students will continue to be excluded from school and school activities for 10 days.

·    SPS will expand access to free COVID-19 testing at two locations for symptomatic students and staff. SPS testing sites are now more geographically accessible - one on the community’s north side and one on the south side. To schedule a test, please contact your school’s nurse. Staff may also schedule testing through their supervisor.

·    Free COVID-19 community testing will be provided in Springfield on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Springfield Cardinals parking lot (south of Hammons Field between Trafficway and St. Louis St.). This is a PCR test and results will be available as soon as possible, but no later than 72 hours from the event. For more information, visit this site.

·    SPS will continue to report weekly COVID-19 case totals on the district’s website at sps.org/covidstats; however, contact tracing to determine direct contacts will be discontinued, in most cases, due to widespread community transmission. Moving forward, all staff and students should assume they have been in close contact with a COVID-positive individual and should continually monitor for symptoms. Notification of direct contacts will continue in the following cases:

1. In the elementary learning environment, SPS will notify families when a case has been identified within a child’s classroom.

2. Participants in athletics and other extracurricular activities will be notified when a case is identified on a team and exposure has potentially occurred during practice or competition.

·    SPS will continue to monitor health conditions in schools and the community and will further modify its COVID-19 protocols as the district is able.

We look forward to welcoming staff and students back to in-person learning on Monday. In the meantime, we wish you the very best as you continue caring for your family during this difficult time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

* AMI Attendance and Assignments - Students have until the end of the day Monday, Jan. 31st to submit any assignments to teachers in order to be counted present. * COVID - 19 UPDATE -

Jan. 14, 2022

SPS Families:

As we complete the end of the first full week of the second semester, this message provides an update related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cases in our community are surging, and as expected, the surge is impacting the learning environment. On multiple days this week, SPS documented more COVID-19 cases in a single day than the district had experienced in any prior 7-day period. This trend culminated in Friday’s absence of 20% of the SPS workforce and 19% of our student body.

Prior to the latest surge, public schools were already facing significant staffing challenges. Moving forward, the district will amend its COVID-19 protocols, as allowed, to help ensure the continuation of safe, in-person learning.

·    All SPS staff and visitors are required to wear masks while inside district facilities, effective Tuesday, January 18. SPS will reassess the need for this requirement on February 4 and make an updated announcement at that time. Please note that the Missouri Attorney General’s cease-and-desist directives on December 8 apply to students and not to employees.

·    Masking for students remains strongly recommended and masks are available for anyone who needs them. Please see this guidance regarding appropriate face coverings and how to ensure they are worn properly.

·    The district will expand testing locations and will provide an update next week. In the meantime, symptomatic students and staff may continue to receive free testing at a centralized location and appointments may be made through your school’s nurse.

In addition, SPS will continue the following protocols already communicated to families on Dec. 22 and Jan. 3:

·    Masks must continue to be worn at all times while riding public transportation, including school buses and other district-provided options, due to a federal mandate.

·    Parents should continue to monitor children for symptoms of illness daily.

·    Students and staff exhibiting symptoms of any illness must stay home until symptoms resolve and/or they are cleared by a medical provider to return. For more information on the related policy and procedures, please view the handbook.

·    COVID-positive students will continue to be excluded from school and school activities for 10 days.

·    Students who are identified as direct contacts of a COVID-positive individual will be notified; however, they will not be excluded from school or work unless they are symptomatic.

·    SPS will continue to report weekly COVID-19 cases at sps.org/covidstats

·    SPS will continue to monitor health conditions in schools and will further modify its COVID-19 protocols as the district is able.

If SPS is unable to provide appropriate staffing as the COVID-19 surge continues, please know that a transition to virtual learning for a limited period of time may be necessary for an individual classroom, grade level or school building. That decision will be made carefully, based on the district’s inability to staff a classroom or school building, and will be communicated directly to those impacted.

As a reminder, all of the district’s COVID-19 protocols are available for review here.

Thank you for your understanding, flexibility and grace as we continue to adapt and address the difficult circumstances posed by the pandemic.

We look forward to welcoming you back to school on Tuesday, January 18. In the meantime, enjoy your three-day holiday weekend as we honor the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

* Progress reports - You can access grades any time via eSchool Home Access from our website kickapoochiefs.org and find eSchool Home Access under Quick Links on the right side of the page. Teachers should be updating student grades in eSchool on a weekly basis.

Dec. 22, 2021

Dear SPS parent or guardian:

Throughout the pandemic, Springfield Public Schools has focused on creating a school environment that protects the safety and well-being of students and staff. During the past six months, our efforts have focused on practices that contribute to maintaining in-person learning five days a week. These strategies were outlined in the 2021-2022 Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services Plan.

At the time it was published, we committed to reviewing the plan after six months and considering what, if any, modifications are necessary. We recently completed that review and have updated the plan, which you may view here.

As promised throughout the fall, our intention has been to remove the masking mandate in January. All students ages 5-18 have now had the opportunity to be fully vaccinated. When students return Jan. 4, wearing masks will be optional. Masks will be strongly recommended while in district facilities. Due to a federal mandate, masks must continue to be worn at all times while riding public transportation, including school buses and other district-provided transportation.

The Missouri Attorney General recently issued a cease and desist letter that placed school districts and public health officials in a very difficult situation, limiting our ability to respond during a pandemic. Without clarification from a court regarding the Attorney General's recent directives, SPS has no other option but to modify our COVID-19 quarantine protocols. Updates to the district's plan include the following:

  • Parents or guardians should continue to monitor students regularly for COVID-19 symptoms.

  • Students and staff exhibiting symptoms of any illness must stay home until symptoms resolve and/or they are cleared by a medical provider to return. For more information on the related policy and procedures, view the student handbook.

  • COVID-positive students will continue to be excluded from school and school activities for 10 days.

  • Students who are identified as direct contacts of a COVID-positive individual will be notified; however, they will not be excluded from school unless they are symptomatic.

  • SPS will continue to report weekly COVID-19 cases at sps.org/covidstats. However, daily public notifications of COVID cases will end.

SPS will continue to monitor health conditions in schools and the community and will make modifications to its COVID-19 protocols as warranted.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work together to keep students and staff healthy.

* Progress reports - You can access grades any time via eSchool Home Access from our website kickapoochiefs.org and find eSchool Home Access under Quick Links on the right side of the page. Teachers should be updating student grades in eSchool on a weekly basis.

* Students with 2 or more F's in core classes will be assigned to IPLT (Intensive Personalized Learning Time) and it lasts until the next progress report. This intervention is set up to help students succeed during school hours.

We also offer FREE tutoring with KHS teachers after school M - F until 3:45 p.m. in the library. Just show up ready to learn.

* My robo calls to families of students with a D or F will be sent out on Tuesday evenings beginning in 2 - 3 weeks.
