* Return to Seated Learning Monday, Jan. 31 -

Jan. 28, 2022

SPS Families:

The ongoing surge of the Omicron variant continues to create significant challenges. SPS has documented more than 2,200 cases of COVID-19 among staff and students since returning from Winter Break on Jan. 4 and more than 350 cases this week alone. An improved forecasting of staff absences for next week, however, indicates that the district is able to return to a normal schedule. SPS will resume in-person learning on Monday, Jan. 31.

As staff and students prepare to return to the classroom on Monday, please note the following:

·    Masks are required for all SPS staff and visitors through Feb. 4. Masks are strongly recommended for all students. Please see this guidance regarding appropriate face coverings and how to ensure they are worn properly.

·    Masks must continue to be worn at all times while riding public transportation, including school buses and other district-provided options, due to a federal mandate.

·    Masks are available for staff and students who need them.

·    Every effort will be made to ensure appropriate social distancing within the learning environment, whenever possible.

·    Parents and staff should continue to monitor for symptoms of illness daily.

·    Students exhibiting symptoms of any illness must stay home until symptoms resolve and/or they are cleared by a medical provider to return. For more information on the related policy and procedures, please view the handbook.

·    COVID-positive students will continue to be excluded from school and school activities for 10 days.

·    SPS will expand access to free COVID-19 testing at two locations for symptomatic students and staff. SPS testing sites are now more geographically accessible - one on the community’s north side and one on the south side. To schedule a test, please contact your school’s nurse. Staff may also schedule testing through their supervisor.

·    Free COVID-19 community testing will be provided in Springfield on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Springfield Cardinals parking lot (south of Hammons Field between Trafficway and St. Louis St.). This is a PCR test and results will be available as soon as possible, but no later than 72 hours from the event. For more information, visit this site.

·    SPS will continue to report weekly COVID-19 case totals on the district’s website at sps.org/covidstats; however, contact tracing to determine direct contacts will be discontinued, in most cases, due to widespread community transmission. Moving forward, all staff and students should assume they have been in close contact with a COVID-positive individual and should continually monitor for symptoms. Notification of direct contacts will continue in the following cases:

1. In the elementary learning environment, SPS will notify families when a case has been identified within a child’s classroom.

2. Participants in athletics and other extracurricular activities will be notified when a case is identified on a team and exposure has potentially occurred during practice or competition.

·    SPS will continue to monitor health conditions in schools and the community and will further modify its COVID-19 protocols as the district is able.

We look forward to welcoming staff and students back to in-person learning on Monday. In the meantime, we wish you the very best as you continue caring for your family during this difficult time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

* AMI Attendance and Assignments - Students have until the end of the day Monday, Jan. 31st to submit any assignments to teachers in order to be counted present.
