Jan. 25th, 2016 Announcements

Hello Cherokee Families,

What an interesting week we had last week. . .I’m glad to see warmer weather in the forecast for later this week and weekend.

Two resources I have found valuable in educating our children and parenting a middle schooler are All-Pro Dad and Common Sense Media.

The Smart Talk - The Smart Talk gets parents and kids together to have a clear conversation about all the devices you use and how to be responsible.

Looking for a way to block ads on student Chromebooks?  AdBlock is a FREE Chromebook extension that blocks inappropriate content.

1. Progress report for 3rd quarter - The first one was sent home Friday, Jan. 22nd. Questions or concerns? Please contact teachers as soon as possible. Thanks.
2. Daily Announcement and website – Remember you can stay closely connected with these listed events and even more each day by visiting our website HERE. Our Daily Announcements are updated Monday – Friday.
3. 2015 - 2016 Yearbook orders - May be ordered online now until Feb. 29th. Order HERE
4. SPS Online classes - Current 8th grade and high school students could register for the 2016 - 2017 school year starting Saturday. Didn’t get a chance to register this weekend? You still have time, but classes fill up fast!
5. Summer School - Is expanding even more. Check out this VIDEO for more information on Explore 2016. More info is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, Jan. 27th.
6. Online and Social media safety - We will have a guest speaker at Cherokee on today, Monday, Jan. 25th to speak to our students and staff about online safety.
We will have a parent meeting from 6 - 7 p.m. TONIGHT Jan. 25th at Cherokee to learn more about how to stay abreast of the latest and how to keep our students safe online. Please see the topics HERE. Please let me know if you have any questions.
7. Nominate one of our outstanding teachers today - Turner Reading award and/or Teacher of the Year nominations are being taken now. Learn more HERE.
8. We have an amazing team here at Cherokee. Thank you all the families who submitted a recognition this year! You have no idea how much this means to our teachers and staff.
You can complete an Employee Recognition Form here (the link is functioning again) to show them your appreciation. No recognition is too small. Thank you for taking the time to recognize and celebrate our staff!
9. 7th Annual Blood Drive - Monday, Feb. 29th from 2 - 6 p.m. in the Cherokee cafeteria. Hosted by Cherokee National Junior Honor Society in conjunction with Community Blood Center of the Ozarks. One hour of your day could save up to 3 lives. Thank you.
10. Kickapoo Soccer Academy - An informational meeting for families with students in grades 2 - 7 are invited to the Kickapoo library on Tuesday, Jan. 26th at 6:30 p.m. Click HERE for more information.
11. Did you receive your automated phone message? One of the avenues we use to communicate school cancellations and other important messages is through Connect 5, our automated phone message system.  If you are not receiving these messages or would like to change the phone number you receive them at, please complete the Connect 5 form and submit it to your child's school.  
12. Free/reduced lunch applications being accepted now - Parents seeking to apply for free/reduced lunch for their students may apply online for reduced breakfast and lunch meal rates. Apply now.
13. 8th grade Job Shadow - Our annual Job Shadow event is Tuesday, Feb. 2nd. At this time all 8th graders should have Job Shadow sites contacted and confirmed and forms will not be accepted past Wednesday of next week. Extra copies of forms can be found on the Counseling Commons Canvas Page under College and Career. Please contact Mrs. Wilson, jrwilson@spsmail.org, with any questions.

11. Carline reminder - Thank you for pulling as far forward as possible each morning and afternoon. When everyone does so the carline moves so much smoother and quicker.
Also, please do not drop off at the west (athletic) parking lot. This is where our buses enter and carline exits. When we have cars coming in and dropping off in this area it is dangerous. Thank you.
