Kickapoo announcements Feb. 4 - 8, 2019

Kickapoo Families,
What an interesting weather week. A snow day and the polar vortex with negative wind
chills to 60s this weekend. I hope everyone enjoyed the unseasonably warmer weather.

I also want to thank everyone for trusting us with your students. We don't take our work
lightly as we do our best to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment for all.

We hope everyone can make it to Kickapoo this Thursday as we have the following
events taking place:

Call 523-8749 on Monday between 7:30 a.m. and 2:50 p.m. to schedule an appointment.
Tuesday - Thursday you will need to contact the teacher to schedule.

Kickapoo University meeting - Thursday, Feb. 7th at 5:30 p.m. in the Performing
Arts Center.

Junior parent meeting - If your student is currently a junior you should attend this meeting
to learn more of what to expect during the Senior year. The meeting is Thursday, Feb. 7th
at 6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

PTSA Dinner for KHS staff Thursday, Feb. 7th
With parent teacher conferences this Thursday our staff won't have a chance to get dinner
so our PTSA would love to feed them with a Chili Cook off!
Use this link to see what is needed and how you can share your cooking talents and/or time
to support our team!
Thank you!

Prop S Information
Proposition S would fund 39 priority projects
Springfield voters will be asked April 2 to consider a $168 million bond proposal to fund 39 high-priority projects, which were recommended by a citizen’s task force to make our schools safer and stronger for students and staff.

The projects will renovate or reconstruct 6 schools, create safer entrances at 31 schools, plus add classroom space to expand preschool.

While Kickapoo is not directly receiving funds one of our feeder schools, Carver, will be one
of the schools to receive the addition of a secure entrance.
Projects that would be funded by Proposition S include:
  • Secure entrances will be built or renovated at 31 schools including Carver MS.
  • Renovation at Sunshine and Williams elementary schools and Hillcrest High School will address accessibility and security challenges, in addition to other improvements.
  • New schools will be constructed for Boyd and Delaware elementary schools and Jarrett Middle School, fixing all security and accessibility issues.
  • New storm shelters will be added to Boyd, Delaware, Williams and Sunshine elementary schools, Jarrett Middle School and the southwest early childhood center.
  • Classroom space will be added to expand preschool services in the district.

These school improvements would cost less than 10 cents a day in additional property taxes for a home with a market value of $100,000.  This proposal requests an 18-cent increase to the debt-service levy, which would be phased in over two years: 9 cents in 2019 and an additional 9 cents in 2020.

Learn more about Proposition S at sps.org/PropS.

GOCAPS for current 10th and 11th graders
The GO CAPS Application is open and can be found here: https://gocaps.yourcapsnetwork.org/enrollment/
I advise you to go ahead and apply; however, when you do, please make sure that you are detailed in your answers and you use good grammar and punctuation. Remember, the application committee does not know you so you want to share your story and intentions the best you can!

Also, GO CAPS Open Houses are scheduled! We encourage students & parents to attend the open house of the strand their student is applying for! See below for a list of dates/times/locations:

All Strand Informational Review (This includes the two listed above as well as
IT & Software solutions, Engineering and Manufacturing, and Business).
Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
eFactory
405 N. Jefferson Ave.

We typically find out who made it into GO CAPS in Early April. Students will need to go ahead and schedule GO CAPS as half their day when they are doing their 2019-2020 scheduling with Kickapoo. Students get to choose if they want AM or PM, but also have to make it work with the classes they are needing to take at Kickapoo.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions!

Thanks!
