Hello Cherokee Families,

Welcome back students! I hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break.

We begin 4^th quarter today and with it brings MAP testing. We will begin in early April and I will send out the schedule very soon. Please note we will have more days of testing due to the online format. I will send out more details in the weeks to come.

Here are a few updates and reminders for you:

1.     Summer School – It isn't too late to sign up. Plenty of seats still available! Registration for ALL ages is currently open. Don't delay because it will be the Best. Summer. Ever. #SummerAtSPS

b.     Transportation is free to Carver for any Cherokee student living more than 1.5 miles from Carver. Free breakfast and lunch as well!

2.     Artworks - The Artworks program is so much fun they don’t know they’re learning!

a.     Artworks is designed to foster an appreciation of art for students entering grades 3-8 for the 2015-2016 school year. Artwork introduces students to a variety of materials and artistic concepts to evoke their curiosity and to hone their natural creativity. Students work with professional artists who teach students in a fun, relaxed environment where they can express their creativity and gain self-confidence.

b.     Enroll at the Summer School office located in the Kraft Administrative Center, 1359 E. St. Louis St. beginning at 9 a.m. on March 2.  The $30 supply fee is due at the time of registration.  Students receiving free/reduced lunch during the regular school year can apply for a fee waiver.

c.      There are two Artwork sessions.  The first is June 15-26 and the second is July 6-17.  A morning section, 8:30 – 10 a.m., and an afternoon section, 12:30 – 2 p.m. is offered during each session.  Students may attend both sessions but only one section in each session.  Artwork classes will be held at Bingham Elementary, 2126 E. Cherry St.

3.     Looking for a way to recognize Cherokee staff? We’ve had several parents do this recently. Thanks so much! You have no idea how much this means to our staff.

a.     Also, please consider nominating our librarian, Ms. Bueno, for the 2015 Linda Luke Librarian of the Year Award.  The deadline to nominate is Friday, March 27^th, 2015.  This is a very special honor which is given in memory of Linda Luke who served as librarian at Disney and Hickory Hills.  The award comes with a cash prize which benefits the librarian and the school library.

b.    Attached you will find the nomination form.  The form can also be downloaded at www.supportSPS.org.  

4.     Yearbooks are on sale until March 31^st . Check our website for more information. Online purchases only.

5.     Also, you can follow us on Twitter by searching for @CherokeeSPS or you can receive text messages via Remind by sending a text to 81010 with the message @principalp

a.     We use our Twitter feed to not only make announcements, but also celebrate and share our story. I encourage you to check it out. Our Twitter feed is visible on the left-hand side of our webpage, below the News and Links items. You can scroll thorough to see all the news without signing up for Twitter.

6.     Report cards are scheduled to be sent home Friday, March 20^th.

7.     PTSA meeting - Next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 17th at 5:30 p.m. ALL are welcome.

8.     2015 – 2016 School Calendar - The SPS school board approved the 15 - 16 calendar last week and it can be found HERE

2015-2016 Cherokee Orientation schedule

Monday, Aug. 3: 6th grade @ 5 - 6 p.m. & 7th grade Endeavor 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Aug. 4: 7th grade Panthers @ 5 - 6 p.m. & 7th grade Ravens 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 5: New to Cherokee 8th graders 12 - 1 & all returning 8th graders schedule pick up after 1 p.m.

9.     Spring Book Fair – March 23 – 27. All proceeds will be used for the library. Daily Announcement and website – Remember you can stay closely connected with these listed events and even more each day by visiting our website HERE. Our Daily Announcements are updated Monday – Friday.
